4 South Californians participated in the event

Two South Californian chess players won prizes in the Eighth Ibero-American Championship held last weekend at the Los Pinos Cultural Complex in Mexico City.

The BCS champion, Algol Mendoza won first place in the U-21 category, after a match against national and international opponents of this discipline, his brother Zuben, current state champion U-14, won fifth place in the U-18 category, after defeating players from the Iberian Peninsula, South and Central America.

Former national junior champion Ayleen Ramirez Toledo and national Olympic medalist Paul Flores had a good tournament, both improving their international ranking.

The next event for the winners is the National Open Championship of the specialty, to be held in Chihuahua.
