- Women may legally terminate their pregnancies up to 12 weeks of gestation: it is the 9th state in Mexico to recognize the right to choose.
The Congress of Baja California Sur approved, with 16 votes in favor and 3 against, the initiative on legal abortion. The legal abortion law will enter into force one day after publication in the official gazette of the entity.
The approved initiative, proposed by a citizen, establishes reforms to several articles of the Penal Code where some current sentences are modified, changing them to community service, or else, toughening the years in prison for those who force a pregnant woman to have an abortion.
Until June 2022, there are nine states where abortion is legal up to 12 weeks of gestation:
